Top five caravan sites for fishing enthusiasts
Just like fish and chips, some pairings are simply meant to be. And so it is with fishing and caravanning, as what could be better than casting off in an idyllic countryside setting having left all your everyday worries behind?
Whether you’re seeking the peace and solitude of a tranquil riverbank, the camaraderie of fellow anglers, or a fun experience to share with the family, there’s a caravan park near the water that’s right for you.
As a taster, here’s a selection of five we’ve already fallen for hook, line and sinker.
The peaceful one…
- A tranquil park with river fishing on The Banwy, a shallow tributary of the Severn
- Located within an hour's drive of Snowdonia National Park and the Shropshire Hills
- Dogs welcome, both at the Park and at the nearby pub, which serves hot food and local ales
The river runs right through this highly-rated and well-maintained park, home to otters and kingfishers – as well as to a good supply of grayling, brown trout and salmon. There’s no charge for fishing but would-be anglers must bring their own kit and licence.
Younger visitors can enjoy a splash in the stream or a game of Poohsticks from the nearby stone bridge, plus there’s a playground on-site and another in the garden of the local pub, just a minute’s walk away. For those who want to stretch their legs a little (or a lot) further, the 135-mile Glyndŵr’s Way passes right by the village.
Caravanner’s verdict: A little gem
The woodland one…
- A quiet adults-only site with a well-stocked fishing lake
- Just a 30-minute drive from the Kentish coast – and a 20-minute stroll to a top-rated local pub
- Dogs welcome
Set in five acres of woodland, this green and pleasant bolthole has its own private lake stocked with roach, rudd, and perch – the ideal place to while away the hours, bothered only by the resident waterfowl.
Dark skies make this a good spot for stargazers, while those with their eyes on more earthly delights can take their pick from the designer outlets in nearby Ashford (less than 15 mins drive away) and seaside towns such as Dungeness (great for bird life) and genteel Rye and Winchelsea.
Caravanner’s verdict: Perfect for a tranquil escape
The versatile one…
- A relaxed, family-run park on an organic smallholding with fishing in the adjacent Wye waters
- Close to the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye and just a short walk to the Offa's Dyke Path
- Dogs welcome
This please-all site is great for keen anglers, ready to scout for barbel, chub and dace in the river Wye (please bring your kit and licence).
However, there’s something here for everyone – not just anglers, bibliophiles and walkers - but also pony trekkers, canoeists, golfers and bikers. The site also offers accessible facilities in the recently built toilet and shower block.
Caravanner’s verdict: Warm and welcoming with cracking mountain views
The family-friendly one...
- A family and dog-friendly site complete with a 1.5-acre fishing lake (modestly-priced kit hire available)
- Just a 15-minute drive from the coastal towns of Lyme Regis and Seaton
- A couple of pubs and a farm shop all within easy walking distance
This 16-acre park is made up mainly of forest and pasture land and has a well-stocked lake boasting rudd, tench, barbel and mirror carp. This includes plenty of little fish for youngsters who are just starting out with a rod.
However, fish are far from the only wildlife you’ll find at Rhea Farm. The park is also home to rheas (South American ostriches – hence the name) as well as emus, goats, sheep and even a giant tortoise. It also has great green credentials. The owners encourage recycling, use waste-wood to heat the water and solar energy to power the lights and showers.
Caravanner’s verdict: Quirky and fun
The escape-from-it-all one...
- A remote rural site in the Lincolnshire countryside, with a well-stocked fishing lake
- Home to many rescue animals including alpacas, several ex-battery hens, pigs, geese and ducks
- Dogs are welcome and there is a dog exercise area on-site
Whether you’re keen to be up and fishing or content with simply lazing by the lakeside, the amiable family-run site offers the ideal setting.
The park occupies a five-acre plot that includes paddocks, a playground, open pastureland and a private woodland walk, much of it a haven for wildlife. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot deer, foxes, owls, and woodpeckers.
Caravanner’s verdict: The ideal retreat for nature lovers
